Leap Day Storm Wrap Up and Friday Storm Update

A widespread 8-16" fell across northern Wisconsin and central Minnesota. Some areas came in with 2 feet of the white stuff, for example Crandon, WI had 24". The storm was also responsible for the tornado outbreak in southern parts of the midwest.
Looking ahead to Friday, a narrow band of moderate snow will likely develop west of the track. At least several inches are likely.

First Snow Map for the Storm of the Year

An all out blizzard will happen Tuesday and Wednesday. Looks to be the storm of the year for the midwest. There will be many areas that reach a foot of snow. Amounts will drop off further south due to a mix of rain and snow. Some icing is possible in southern Wisconsin and SE Minnesota. Look for more updates as this event gets closer.

MAJOR Winter Storm For Midwest This Week

The parade of storms will continue. Look for snow to develop in the Dakotas Tuesday night and progress west throughout Wednesday and drop very heavy snow in many areas. It appears to be the storm of the year so far. The heaviest snow will fall during the afternoon on Wed. and wind down at night. A foot of snow is very likely for many areas, especially southern MN and central/northern WI. Furthermore, there is a chance of ice accumulation in the pink area, but many conditions still need to come together for that to happen. Nevertheless, the pink area will see rain/snow/sleet and will be a mess for travel. Stay tuned for this latest winter storm!

Snow Expected for late This Weekend

As the last snowstorm exits into Canada, the next one is right behind it. It will be the second storm in a parade of 4 storms. A strong one for the middle of the week, then a weaker one for late next week. With that said, this weekend's storm will be mostly if not all a snow maker. A general 3-6" can be expected in many areas in the northern plains with up to 7 fluffy inches in northern North Dakota. Be sure to keep it here for updates on the storms for the coming week!

Snow Map For Thursday and Thursday Night

A narrow band of heavy snow will develop this afternoon and tonight, up to 8" in some spots can be expected. There is a good chance of thundersnow somewhere in the midwest, Comment if you hear some!

Thursday Snow Getting much more interesting...

If you have been following this storm the past few days, forget all you have heard until this point. Models coming in far stronger and with more dynamics, leading to the possibility of thundersnow. A narrow band of 6+" is very likely, but tough to pinpoint where this will occur. A general 3-6" will occur with higher totals in the western swath and some isolated 6,7,8 inch amounts in the east.

Light Snow Thursday, Stronger System Next Monday

Places in the Midwest can expect light snow on Thursday, nothing major. A 1-3" maybe 4" can be expected in the blue outline. Place further south will see a wintry mix, but no freezing rain. The stronger storm is still showing up on the models, but has shifted slightly west so the heaviest snow would be in MN. We expected more fluctuations in the track over the next couple days so stay tuned.

Active Pattern Update

Light Snow will continue to spread over the Midwest today and tonight and accumulate in many areas. The system will weaken as it moves to the east so the heaviest totals will occur in the far northwest of the midwest. The system Thursday is looking less an less impressive, maybe an inch out of that one. But...the storm for next Sunday and Monday is looking stronger and is showing up in all the major computer models. If trends continue this could be our first major winter storm of the season, maybe 6-12"? But as this winter has been..this may be another model fantasy. Stay tuned!

A few Storm Systems in the Midwest this Week

The weather pattern is about to get slightly more active for the Midwest. Tomorrow will bring a general 1-3" for most of Minnesota and NW Wisconsin, with a wintry mix points south. The storm will weaken as it moves east, which is nothing new this winter.. Thursday will likely spread another 1-4" in the same areas, but may include all of Wisconsin and Michigan this time around. After these two Alberta Clippers a stronger system is looking more promising for next Sunday into Monday. Because this winter has been quite a tease and the NAO is staying positive confidence is not all that high. But models are showing a winter storm caliber system. Over a week away, but 4-8"? more information as the week progresses.

Winter to Make a Return in the Midwest

It has been a long time since the Midwest was on the verge of any significant weather. This Thursday may be the first widespread winter storm of the season. It is taking the perfect track for heavy snow much of the midwest. Models are finally beginning to agree on a solution, a snowy solution at that. The area on the map show the most likely area of 2" or more of snow on Thursday. As of now the heaviest snows appear to occur in far NE IA and southern WI. Exact totals vary from model to model, but 4-8" is definitely not out of the question. If i had to put a guess on it now i would say the heaviest areas will see 2-5". It is 3-4 days out, and will know much more in the next 36-48 hours. Hopefully confidence is high enough for a snow map by Wed at the latest.

Edit: Thunderstorms in the south are going to soak up all the moisture, a dusting to an inch at best in the blue outline. 1-2" in central Michigan.

More of the Same, Quiet Weather in Midwest

More quiet weather expected for the rest of the week. Nothing really to highlight in the forecast except it will cool down this weekend and some snow possible next Monday. Temps will cool to 5-15 degrees below normal through all of the midwest by saturday, but then warm up again mid to late next week. Some light snow appears likely in Iowa and Wisconsin on Monday, but to far out to pinpoint amounts and where. Something like a 1-4" is a fair bet.

Midwest and Plains Weekend Storm

A storm storm will bring near blizzard conditions to parts of the plains on Saturday and then progress northeast, but weaken rapidly. This is a closed low, meaning it will be strong, short lived and can dump massive amounts of snow in isolated areas. Confidence is pretty high for Nebraska an Iowa, but for parts east it depends on how long the storm will stay together. It really depends on what model you believe in. The NAM and DGEX hold the system together for some snow to reach Wisconsin and Illinois, but the GFS, SREF, CMC, GEM shows the closed low falling apart before reaching the Mississippi river. The EURO has the storm falling apart around the river, but hold light show into WI and IL. Either way, someone in Nebraska or Iowa will see a foot of snow, maybe even 18". stay tuned! a more in depth snow forecast tomorrow.
